Jadavpur University has today established itself as an internationally acclaimed university committed towards advanced study and research. It offers a vast repertoire of transformational courses, employs the best minds in its faculty and produces some of the greatest talent that propel organizations in and beyond India. It was the result of the efforts of these accomplished individuals that the Alumni Association in Mumbai was born in the mid 1956. The aim of the organization – to ensure that the knowledge, character and relations developed within the ramparts of one of the most respected colleges in the country do not fade away amid the monotony of everyday life.

Jadavpur University Alumni Association Mumbai Branch Trust


Jadavpur University Alumni Association Mumbai Branch Trust has been formed in 1980 by Alumni Association, NCE Bengal and Jadavpur University (Mumbai Branch) that started operation in Mumbai from 1956 onwards. Main objective of this association was to foster the sense of fraternity amongst all the alumni members.

During the last few decades this association has been active by promoting social gathering, organizing international seminar on topical and pertinent subject, organizing Management development program, Enlightenment lecture series , conducting cultural program and bringing out annual publication since to name a few.

Looking at the growth and close involvement by alumni members there was a visionary who mooted the idea of forming a Trust and it took the light of the day in 1980.with the prime objective of giving annual scholarship to meritorious but needy students in Mumbai as well as students from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

It is a registered body under the Societies Registration Act1860 (Act XXI of 1860) and Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950 ,Registration no F-6172(Bom-318-80). This Trust is also approved by the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra, vide Registration no F-23569. Needless to say, by generous donation from individual members and the Alumni Association Mumbai , the corpus fund as on today has grown to around 70 lakhs of rupees and constant effort is being made to scale up this fund to Rs 1 crore in immediate future.

The interest accrued from this corpus fund created out of donation. is used to offer annual scholarships ( Approx 3.5 L annually) to various institutes as mentioned in trust activity section. Also one time major grants are given from time to time to Jadavpur University to support any worthwhile research project or pilot plant or to enhance infrastructure or any specific lab etc

Trust Donation

All donation to the Trust are entitled for income tax exemption under 80 G.The currentl 80G certificate was awarded on 25-10-2016 ( vide certificate no CIT(E) /80G/2033/2016-17) and is valid henceforth subject to adhering to rules and regulations of Commissioner of Income Tax ( Exemptions) . Also note that against each donation a receipt will be issued along with the 80G certificate for obtaining income tax exemption for the donation amount.

Objectives of the Trust

The Mumbai Branch of the Alumni Association, NCE Bengal & Jadavpur University, established this Trust in 1980. Following are the prime objectives of the Trust.

1. To give aids to deserving students for prosecuting further studies in engineering , applied science or research .

2. To give subsidy to the meritorious or needy students in the form of scholarships to cover School/College fees and tuition fees .

3. To provide financial help to deserving students.

4. To organise honoraria to prominent persons for delivering lectures in India .

5. To print, publish, issue and exhibit any journals for promotion, benefit and advancement of education.

Trust Activity of social Responsibilty in Educational field

Scholarships by Trust formed by Mumbai branch- Some overview

The annual scholarships by Mumbai chapter are given from the accrued interest of the trust fund created over the years. While some scholarship are instituted in early days of formations of the trusts in 80s like Vivekananda school, majority deployment were from more than a decade.

Bio data of the past presidents in whose name the scholarship are awarded are circulated during award functions each year.

While instituting the scholarship in the name of each past presidents who are no more with us. ,the Trust representatives visited and interacted with the institute in each case and reported to the BOT for approval of the recommendation considering the merit based or means based. The mean based ones are left to the institute to decide within the framework of the BOT and report of progress collected every year

Following are specific scholarship currently awarded each year

Sausheelya in Anushaktinagar is in the name of late R Debnath who was working in BARC. This institute is for mentally challenged students, the financial aid is given to the institute not for any specific students as advised that individual award may create rivalry among the children. The money is used for administrative purpose or infrastructure requirement.

Similar mentally challenged school scholarship is awarded for Sashi Mangalyam & is in the name of past president late Anil Sinha.This institute is extending education to mentally challenged children mainly belonging to under privileged section of the society and working multiple ways to support them.

This institute also provide medical , paramedical services , psychological testing counseling , psychiatric treatment as per need, physiotherapy, speech therapy and pediatric consultants. Also they provide free school uniforms , free bus facility and free education materials to needy students. There are teaching staff with required no of teachers with special qualification.

They are having “ light a lamp” scheme for adopting/sponsorship of students by donors. The facility is housed in sprawling 3 storied bungalow donated for the purpose by the late founder trustee late Mrs Sushila Srinivasan in 1958.

Swami Vivekananda School scholarship at Chembur is in the name of late Mihir Lodh who was associated and stayed in Chembur. This one is adopt a child scheme for 1st to 4th std for five students for financially challenged students selected by school.

The VJTI scholarship topper in 2nd year Mechanical Eng student is in the name of late C K Radhakisnan who was Mechanical Eng and had lot contribution in the social work at Matunga area.

Likewise the scholarships JU in the name of late Supriya Basu are through MOU for toppers in 2nd year in Arts, Science and Eng as mid course the scholarship money can be used for study material like comp, book , etc.We have added 3rd year Eng scholarship for the topper as well.

Further the 2 scholarships at Jadavpur Vidhyapith at Kolkata under NCE Bengal are through MOU and for late Sushil Ganguly for financially challenged students selected by the school and late B C rakshit award for teacher of the year at JU vidyapith selected by the School with students, parents and staff members.

The scholarship in SNDT Women's University has also been introduced in the name of late Smt Hemlata Trivedi for 2nd year topper in Computer, Pharmacy and Nursing divisions.

Recently a new annual scholarship is being introduced in the name of Late Tarun K Basu in Vivekananda Education Society's Institute of Technology for Engineering faculty.

The Trust also try to award the scholarships as far as possible in presence of relatives of the the respective past presidents and in the presence of the representatives of the trust

  • To keep the Association in touch with the National Council of Education, Bengal and the Jadavpur University as far as practicable and to render all possible help to the said institutions in their endeavours and objects. The same shall be extended to Main association and its all other branches.
  • To organise and develop the activities of the ex-students of the National Council of Education and the Jadavpur University as far as practicable on matters such as social, economic, educational and philanthropic.
  • To promote the moral, material and industrial progress of Mumbai in particular and India in general.
  • To protect the interest of the ex-students of the said institutions on such matters as may concern them.
  • To act for and represent the ex-students of the said institutions in all public affairs, wherever necessary.
  • To co-operate with other persons and institutions in attaining the above objects or any of them; and to help any other institutions or movements having for their objects the spreading of National Education on lines similar to those of N.C.E., Bengal and Jadavpur University.
  • To publish News Bulletins, Monographs, Books, leaflets or articles to enhance academic awareness of members and the general public and to keep members informed of the activities of the Association.
  • To help the needy and poor students in distress.
  • To arrange for debates, lectures, workshops, seminars and conferences to enhance, diffusion of knowledge amongst students, ex-students, faculty members and the general public.
  • To support and encourage entrepreneurship to the members through web services or otherwise and create forum for the same.
  • To purchase, take on lease or in exchange or otherwise acquire any moveable or immovable property of any description of any rights and privileges and to sell, mortgage, lease, exchange or otherwise dispose off or deal with all or any of the properties belonging to the Association.
  • To purchase, or otherwise acquire, build, construct establish, maintain, reconstruct, equip, alter any buildings, offices, workshops, plants, machinery and other things convenient for all or any of the objects of the Association.
  • To contribute, from time to time, to any charitable, benevolent or useful subject of a public character, the support of which will, in the opinion of the Association, promote all its objects or any of them.
  • To amalgamate with any other institution, society, association or body having objects wholly or partially similar to those of this Association.
  • Generally to do or perform all such other acts and things as may be necessary or conducive to the attainment of all,or any of the above objets or in any way incidental thereto.
  • For diffusion of knowledge, persons of eminence may be called for with suitable honorarium.

Alumni Association of NCE Bengal & Jadavpur University Mumbai, visualize a world, where the essence of Universal brotherhood and humanity should be put on high priority and benefit of technology should be permeated to general masses.
Association and its entire fraternity want to see our beloved motherland to become a developed country within a decade and wish all the JU-ians to contribute to the economy nationally and internationally.
